Transits

Planetary transits: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto on your birth chart

A transit is a planet in today’s sky passing over a point in your birth chart. The slow planets (Jupiter through Pluto) shape the big chapters of life: here’s what each one triggers, point by point and house by house.

Jupiter transits

about 1 year · a few weeks, up to three or four months with the retrograde

Jupiter transits by expanding: it opens, enlarges, gives confidence and opportunities. This is the transit of luck, provided you say yes and don’t grab everything.

Saturn transits

about 2 and a half years · six to nine months, in three passes with the retrograde

Saturn transits by structuring: it slows things down, tests, demands proof. What’s solid gets stronger; what isn’t cracks, and that’s useful information.

Uranus transits

about 7 years · one to two years, with several passes

Uranus transits by liberating: it breaks what confines you, wakes you up, surprises you. Change arrives from the outside when you haven’t made it from the inside.

Neptune transits

about 14 years · about two years

Neptune transits by dissolving: it blurs outlines, inspires, drains, idealizes. You can’t see clearly, and that’s the point: feel first, understand later.

Pluto transits

12 to 30 years · two to three years

Pluto transits by transforming: it strips you bare, destroys what’s dead, concentrates a power you didn’t know you had. Nothing stays the same.

Frequently asked questions

What is a transit in astrology?

It’s the passage of a planet in today’s sky over a point in your birth chart (a planet, the Ascendant, the Midheaven) or through one of your houses. Slow-planet transits mark the major stages of life; fast-planet ones set the mood of the week.

How do I know which transits I’m going through right now?

Calculate your free chart, then compare your chart’s positions with those on the daily sky page: a transit is active when a current planet forms an aspect (0°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 180°) within two degrees of a natal point.

How long does a transit last?

Jupiter: a few weeks to a few months. Saturn: six to nine months. Uranus: one to two years. Neptune and Pluto: two to three years, in several passes because of retrogrades.

Which transit matters most?

The Saturn return (around age 29) and transits of Pluto, Uranus and Neptune over the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Midheaven are the ones that change a life. Jupiter transits are the most enjoyable.
